Irish-born immigrant to U.S. in 1854. Part owner of Chicago Post before the Civil War. Enlisted and mustered in as major in the 90th Illinois Infantry September 23, 1862. Married Margaret Cameron about November 1862 and she went with him to winter quarters. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel March 6, 1863, effective September 29, 1863, and to colonel November 25, 1863, but was never officially mustered as colonel. Mustered out June 6, 1865.
